9/26/2013 Lighthouse Center gets new name; big benefit yard sale set for Oct. 5

The Lighthouse Resource and Pregnancy Center, located at 417 Cliff Street in Silver Cliff, is changing its name in an effort to move into the 21st century.

The new name will now be Lighthouse Pregnancy Resources, or LPR.

None of the free services that LPR have provided in the past will change. It will continue to give free pregnancy tests, STD counseling, life skills, clothing, and baby accessories.

In addition to the name change, beginning on the first Saturday in October, the Lighthouse will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This will last until the first Saturday in December.

The Lighthouse is also holding an indoor yard sale on Saturday, October 5. The money received from the sale, and from donations, will be put toward buying ultrasound equipment.

"An ultrasound is a need in the community," said volunteer and board member Linda Kaufman.

The money it will need to raise in order to purchase the equipment is between $50,000 and $60,000.

"The Health Clinic in town doesn’t have one," Kaufman said. "It would be very beneficial for mothers to be treated here instead of having to travel down the mountain for an ultrasound."

Volunteer Dr. Gary Mohr from the clinic would serve as medical advisor to oversee all ultrasound use, and volunteer Theresa Majka would give the ultrasound. Majka also works at the clinic as a registered nurse.

The indoor yard sale includes as almost new furniture and items. Kaufman said the nicer pieces will be at a set price.

The queen sleeper sofa is expected to cost $300. Ethan Allen Old Tavern dark pine china cabinets will go for around $499.

At the sale, there will also be a new microwave, a pristine day bed with steel frame, and dishware.

The Oct. 5 indoor yard sale will begin at 9 a.m. and go until 1 p.m. For more information, call 783-4357.
