3/11/2010 Law officer seeking Republican nod as sheriff hopeful
Shannon Byerly has announced his candidacy for sheriff on the Republican ticket

Shannon Byerly has announced his candidacy for sheriff on the Republican ticket.

Byerly and his wife, Lynette, have lived in the Valley for some nine years.

The couple has two children, Ryan, a junior at Custer County High School and Lane, an eighth grader.

Following a nearly eight-year stint in the  U.S. Navy, Byerly and his family moved to Washington state before moving back to Colorado. He is a Rye native.

Byerly admits that while he has little experience in the political arena, he believes he has the experience and leadership qualities necessary for the position of sheriff.

Today, Byerly is a sergeant with the Canon City Police Department where he serves as night shift supervisor. He is also the training coordinator for the police department, as well as coordinator for all new officers among other training fields.

Among the numerous training classes he has taken are investigations, citizen interaction and management.

Byerly also said he has worked with the Canon City administrator on budget issues as they pertain to salary and benefit packages.

In addition to his work experience, Byerly has been involved in a number of youth-related activities and sporting events.

He coached youth baseball for four years, and he has been the assistant high school basketball coach at Custer County School for three years.

Byerly is also a volunteer 4-H leader.

Byerly will be facing Republican  incumbent sheriff Fred Jobe at caucus and the county assembly.
