County
fair kicks-off Monday Dozens of local 4-H and FFA youth, as well as others are
putting the final touches on their projects in preparation for the Custer
County Fair. In its 62nd year, the fair will begin Monday, July 13,
and continue through Sunday, July 19. It will be held at the fairgrounds
located just north of Westcliffe on Highway 69. There is no entrance fee and
concessions will be available. Livestock divisions include cattle, sheep, goats and
pigs. Other animal divisions are horses, rabbits, chickens, pocket pets, dogs,
cats and llamas. Other exhibits include baked goods, canned goods, cake
decorating, quilting, knitting, gardening, painting, weaving, photography,
leather crafts and many more. One of the highlights of the fair is the livestock sale,
which takes place Sunday at noon. After the 4-H and FFA students show their livestock,
they are sold at auction to the highest bidder. The highest bidder can keep the
animal and fill a freezer full of meat or the animal can be resold at current
market value. Held in conjunction with the livestock sale is the
fundraising bake sale hosted by the local 4-H Foundation. Proceeds are used to
send local 4-H’ers to leadership camp. To donate a homemade baked good, call Lynetta Gillmore at 783-3223. – fair schedule: Monday, July 13 9 a.m. 4-H and FFA Horse
